Interactive magnifying glass revealing the hidden symbols in the works...

A museum mediation device that helps visitors decipher the hidden symbols in Bartholdi's “Hommage aux aéronefs” (Tribute to Aircraft). Visitors use an interactive magnifying glass to explore an illustration and reveal the meaning of three symbols: the winged wheel (communication), the boat (resilience of Paris), and the pigeon (hope and freedom).

Objective :
Facilitate understanding of Bartholdi's works by making symbolic language accessible through a kinesthetic, playful, and intuitive experience. Invite visitors to observe the work with attention and curiosity while offering mediation tailored to families and international visitors.

Technique :

  • Wooden console with printed RGB illustration incorporating 3 NFC zones
  • Magnifying glass with red gelatin lens and integrated MFRC522 RFID reader
  • RFID cards hidden under each symbol triggering detection
  • Arduino Uno controlling a stepper motor connected to a 3D-printed triangular roller (Toblerone)
  • Automatic roller rotation to display explanatory text + multilingual QR code
  • Return to initial position after 3 seconds for new interaction

Museomix :
A three-day event where multidisciplinary teams prototype innovative mediation devices for museums. The Symboldi project was created by the “Bartho gogo” team during the 2025 edition at the Bartholdi Museum to address the challenge of making artistic symbols accessible to all audiences.
